The annual Strawberry Fresh Stop Markets demonstrate how communities that pull together, plan together and buy together can break down barriers to accessing local, farm-fresh food. Through New Roots, more than 250 families will pool SNAP Benefits and cash to qualify as volume strawberry purchasers from VanMeter Farms in Clarkson, Ky. While New Roots serves all, it primarily works with families with limited resources who would otherwise be unable to purchase local berries and other produce.

“Pooling resources in this way makes local strawberries affordable and available to everyone,” said Ms. Gwendolyn Mitchell, New Roots Organizer and Shareholder

Berries can be picked up at New Roots via curbside delivery.  Free deliveries for older adults and others who are home bound.

All of the strawberries are locally grown without chemical pesticides or herbicides by VanMeter Farms. “We find it very rewarding to partner with New Roots on their Strawberry Fresh Stop Markets. 2020 will be a fantastic season for our berries,” remarked farmer Danny VanMeter. “They are looking great and taste delicious.”
