General AmeriCorps Project Information:  KyCC is a statewide coalition of Kentucky colleges and universities, promoting college access, college attainment, and community impact. The KyCC VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program places VISTA members throughout the Commonwealth to combat poverty and build capacity in community organizations, Kentucky colleges and universities, the Appalachian Region and the Kentucky Promise Zone. KyCC achieves its anti-poverty goals through service activities in the following focus areas: Economic Opportunity, Education, and Healthy Futures. AmeriCorps VISTA is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 18 and older.

VISTA Terms & Benefits:

  • Full-time (40 hours/week), one-year commitment
  • Monthly living allowance of $945 per month ($11,340/year) before taxes
  • Upon completion, choose between education award ($6,095) or cash award ($1,800)

Service Site Specific Information:

VISTA Position Description:  The Sustainable Roots VISTA will build the capacity of New Roots by 1) Using New Roots new Mobile App system, create a sustainable system in which limited-resource volunteer leaders create, run and sustain a local food system within their own fresh-food insecure communities; 2) Build sustainable systems to recruit, thank, and maintain new donor/investors to diversify New Roots funding stream away from grant funding; and, 3) Secure strategic partnerships with organizations that employ workers not earning a livable wage. This work will alleviate poverty by building leadership capacity in individuals living in poverty so they can successfully organize around reducing barriers to fresh food access and other social justice needs.

Responsibilities:

Help build New Root’s new system of market managers through leadership development training.

  • Build on the New Roots Playbook and existing training material to get materials ready for market managers training.
  • Train market managers on the materials created.
  • Continue training as needed throughout the growing season.

Partner with the seven market managers and utilize community organizing to recruit, develop and maintain volunteer leaders and allies with the ultimate objective to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the system.

  • Using Signup.com, make sure that all volunteer slots are filled for every market for the entire growing season.
  • Help recruit a pool of “volunteers in waiting” to replace volunteers that do not show.
  • Work with chef volunteers to ensure they have what they need to excel at the market cooking demos.

Partner with New Roots development director to build on the success of our Sustainable Roots Annual Campaign and Fifty for 50 Business Campaign to replace lost grant funding.

  • Create social media hooks on Instagram and Facebook to recruit more donors.
  • Work with our current list of businesses and Fifty for 50 leaders to meet, greet and recruit potential donors.
  • Work with New Roots development person to continue to recruit members for the Annual Campaign.

Set up outreach systems and build partnerships with companies not paying a livable wage to spread the word about the volunteer leadership and shareholder opportunities.

  • Build on New Roots relationships with local business leaders to encourage them to purchase shares of veggies for their employees.
  • Set up pre and post surveys.
  • Analyze surveys to use as recruiting material

Join other shareholders and leaders to help build our new Mobile App and spread the word that it exists.

  • Work with shareholders and leaders to help build the New Roots Mobile App.
  • Trouble shoot with shareholders who want to use the Mobile App.
  • Work with shareholders and leaders to make the Mobile App go viral.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Community organizing skills
  • Experience living with or working with diverse and vulnerable populations
  • Passion for food justice and fresh, local food.
  • Skilled with spreadsheet design and other Microsoft Office type applications, as well as social media.
  • Building, nurturing and maintaining relationships with everyone from community members to board members, individual and corporate donors.

The ideal candidate’s super powers include organizing volunteer leaders to set up, operate and breakdown our Fresh Stop Markets, all with the end goal of making our markets a huge success in 2019!

Join one of the region’s leading non-profit organizations working to unite communities to spread food justice across the Universe. New Roots (based in the Portland Neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky) seeks a motivated individual to help run the seasonal operations of the Fresh Stop Markets in our Louisville area.

We seek someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced, flexible and extremely gratifying work environment. Individual must be able to lift 25 lbs., direct volunteers, and have an upbeat, positive personality.

DesiredSkills and Experience

The ideal candidate shows initiative, is curious, has the passion to continually improve our processes, has a can-do spirit, positive attitude, have a love and/or experience with vegetables and local food, and can work with minimal supervision.

Other qualifications include:

  • High School diploma or GED or equivalent. Some college experience or a college degree is a plus
  • Experience working with volunteer leaders to get stuff done
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky loads and to perform frequent walking, bending, stooping etc…
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task in a very fluid environment

Responsibilities include:

  • Confirming volunteers are all set to arrive on market day.
  • Arriving at market site at 2:30 PM promptly on market day.
  • Work with leaders to set up facilities for the market; this includes display tables for vegetables, proper signage, kitchen supplies for chef’s demos, check-in devices, etc.
  • Assist farmers with vegetable delivery and un-loading
  • Help to greet shareholders (new and current) and meet their needs with a smile and a hug
  • Be willing to share your knowledge and passion for vegetables, including seasonality, proper storage, recipes, cooking techniques, and more
  • Take down and pack up the market; make sure materials are clean and ready to go for the next round of markets, and store all materials either on site or on the truck
  • Troubleshoot any set up issues on the spot; react quickly and find immediate solutions
  • Become a true believer and representative of the New Roots mission—igniting community power for fresh food access—and represent our Fresh Stop Market brand in your circles of influence, both at and outside of the market
  • Assist with other projects as needed

Wages

Hourly team member for now, with opportunity to advance way beyond this galaxy as we grow! Wages are $15/hour. Paid biweekly.

Hours

Approximately 4.5 hours / biweekly mid-May through November. Openings include:

  1. Shelby Park/Smoketown Fresh Stop Market @ Logan Street Market Tuesdays starting 6/4 and running biweekly until 10/22. Hours 2:30-7:00 PM.
  2. Gendler Grapevine Fresh Stop Market @ the J (Jewish Community Center) Wednesdays starting 6/12 and running biweekly until 10/30. Hours 2:30-7:00 PM.
  3. Portland Fresh Stop Market @ Facilities Management Services Fridays starting 6/14 and running biweekly until 11/1. Hours 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

  • A good sense of design, i.e., how to load and unload all our precious New Roots equipment
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky loads and to perform frequent walking, bending, stooping etc…
  • Good mechanical skills
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task in a very fluid environment

Responsibilities include:

  • Transport materials to the market site: tables, tents, chairs, etc.
  • Work with leaders to set up facilities for the market; this includes display tables for vegetables, proper signage, kitchen supplies for chef’s demos, etc.
  • Assist farmers with vegetable delivery and un-loading
  • Take down and pack up the market; make sure materials are clean and ready to go for the next round of markets, and store all materials either on site or on the truck
  • Maintain Fresh Stop Market material inventory (bags, containers, tablecloths, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot any set up issues on the spot; react quickly and find immediate solutions
  • Assist with other projects as needed

Wages

Hourly team member for now, with opportunity to advance way beyond this galaxy as we grow! Wages are $15/hour.

Hours

Approximately 20 hours / week starting mid-May and going through end of October. Needs to be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Week 1, starting 6/4) and Wednesday and Thursday (Week 2 starting 6/12), 1:30-7:30 PM. We can work out other hours on a flexible schedule.
